Now that I am on 'pure' 64 bit Slackware (no multi-lib), I was forced to get CUPS working with my FX-100 the way I wanted it to work. That means just printing text, in prior attempts CUPS would do somekind of bit map print, works great for printing everything except 'raw' text. I have no desire to print non-text items on the FX-100.
In the past I would just install LPRng from pasture. But all my attempts to get LPRng working meet with failure, so off to google again. I tried various searches in the past without luck and gave up quickly because LPRng use to be available in pasture. Turns out the word 'raw' is the important missing term for the search. All you need to do is select make 'raw' and select model 'Raw Queue' when setting up CUPS. Remember to have /etc/rc.d/rc.cups enabled and root and your User ID part of group 'lp'.
Now that I have CUPS printing text, it seems to be a very nice print subsystem.
